Is it ok to travel to Sri Lanka? Safety minded and ethically minded.
Thank you

SAFETY

  ·

Upon request by this page, sharing personal experiences about Sri Lanka, as we are traveling by Tuktuk across this beautiful and amazing Island

So for anyone who is still in doubt if Sri Lanka is a safe place to visit at the moment:

It’s safe and I’ll tell you why

- Very friendly, helpful and welcoming locals

- Because of the financial crisis not everything (restaurants, bars, hotels) are open, but many of those that are open, are giving their all to make your journey amazing

- The fuel crisis is still visible, but for tourists exceptions and priorities are made. This feels two-sided, but the locals and Sri Lanka really need the tourism to keep their lives and economy going. So we’ve rented a Tuktuk and as a tourist you can get priority at the gass station and are allowed to get a full tank (you have to pay for it of course). We just get in the queue, because it feels weird to cut the line, but when you queue, you’ll find that the locals help you get to the front quite fast to make it easy for you. They are so helpful in many ways

- Power cuts happen once or twice a day, but are often quite short and you can make the most of it together with the people you are with Light some candles , use a torch and talk to each other instead of watching your phone And if you really need to use a phone, get a SIM card for $3,5 and have 4G ready to use

So now we’ve got the insecure parts out of the way, it’s time to mention the reasons why you should visit Sri Lanka in the first place:

- Her beautiful nature and wildlife

- The amazing food, delicious and cooked with love and passion

- The friendly, welcoming and helpful Sri Lankans Such a joy to be around the locals

We are traveling now across the island with the Tuktuk and are enjoying every moment of it We even extended our visa’s (because there’s so much to do!) We did it online (very easy to do so) and got approval within 2 days

Sri Lanka is amazing

I stay here more then one month and it's safe and beautiful. Still don't expect european standards. All the best to you. Just adjust and all is fine

Absolutely, never felt unsafe here, even during the unrest last year. You'll find people here very helpful and your foreign currency will go further at the moment.

Yes! The country is safe - and always was, even during the protests. From the ethical point of view the best you can do for locals is to come and spend some dollars... I was there in August and now I am coming back even with my little kids. There is nothing to worry about

I'm 9th day in Sri Lanka already. It is much better than a year ago, safe, welcoming as always, no problem with fuel, no blackouts. The only missing here is more tourist to help people to manage this crisis. Regarding ethical poin. Well, there are Russian tourists but I leave it to personal beliefs. Come you will enjoy a lot.
